When you are getting your idea designed for eventual manufacturing it is vital that you have your designs made with a keen eye on manufacturing.
Very often our clients will come to us with ready-made designs that look great, but that are either very costly, or not practical to manufacture. Remember, just because the concept looks good on paper or in a 3D CAD file does not mean that it is optimized for maneuverability. You could end up spending a lot of money unnecessarily to manufacture this type of a design.
You will want to make sure that your designer understands that you intend to manufacture and mass produce this idea so his/her designs should be manufacturing-ready, with careful instructions to keep a close eye of the cost effectiveness of the design.
Industrial design (aka. product design) is an art form so don’t be surprised if your designer comes up with some great ideas and concepts that may need to be checked for feasibility.
Ideally, you will want to work with a designer or engineer that has had experience in the past in going from design to product; taking their ideas from the design phase, right through to mass production. This will ensure that they are fully aware of the manufacturing limitations and where they will be able to make some small tweaks to the design that will save you a lot in the way of cost, while not compromising the ascetics and functionality of your idea.
